 Scarsdale, NY - David Hartman, an acclaimed rabbi, author and philosopher of contemporary Judaism, will speak at the first annual program in remembrance of Rabbi Jacob and Deborah Rubenstein, who were killed in a tragic fire in their home in Scarsdale this past spring.
Rabbi Rubenstein was the spiritual leader of Young Israel of Scarsdale.
Rabbi Hartman’s talk, entitled “A Judaic Perspective on the Significance of the Family,” will be held at Westchester Reform Temple (WRT) in Scarsdale on Tuesday, September 9 at 8:00 p.m. There is no charge for this event, which is open to the public.
One of the world’s leading voices of Jewish religious pluralism, Hartman founded the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem in 1976. There he leads a team of research scholars in the study of classical Jewish sources and contemporary issues. Professor of Jewish thought at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he has taught for over two decades, Rabbi Hartman has published extensively and has advised prime ministers on the subject of religious pluralism. Ordained as a rabbi at Yeshiva University in New York, Hartman holds a doctorate in philosophy from McGill University in Montreal, where he served as a congregational rabbi. In 1971, Rabbi Hartman immigrated to Israel with his wife, Barbara, and their five children.
