White Plains, NY - Who would have thought collecting trash could actually be FUN? But fun it will be on Saturday, June 28 when kids who bring 100 or more used plastic bags to Playland will receive free rides as their reward.
“Plastic Bag Day at Playland” is Westchester County’s way of encouraging youngsters to start recycling and cleaning up their environment.
Any child who turns in 100 or more used (and clean) plastic bags at the recycling booth near the park’s entrance will receive a Fun Card good for three free rides and a round of miniature golf (redeemable any day this season). The offer is good from noon to 5 p.m. at Playland Park in Rye. The rain date is Sunday, June 29.
“Everyone’s thinking recycling these days and this is something kids can do. It’s easy and fun,” said County Executive Andy Spano. “This time they’ll get a tangible ‘pay-off’ in the way of free rides, but hopefully they’ll also get the message that the real pay-off is in improving our environment.”
Plastic bags must be clean and dry. Accepted bags include grocery and produce bags, newspaper bags, dry cleaning film, and packaging for toilet paper and paper towels.
Kids have already started doing their part when it comes to recycling in Westchester. At the county’s suggestion, more than a dozen schools recently started plastic bag recycling drives. The county sends the “Veggie Van,” a mobile classroom that runs on vegetable oil to pick them up and talk to kids about good environmental practices. Already, 128,505 or 1,352 pounds of bags have been collected. That’s almost 20 percent of the 7,000 pounds brought in county-wide since March.
Once collected, the bags will be passed on to recyclers to be made into products such as outdoor decks and fencing.
