New Rochelle, NY - Carl Procario-Foley, Director of Iona College Center for Campus Ministries, was recently installed as the new President of the Interreligious Council of New Rochelle (IRC).
Mr. Procario-Foley, who previously served as the Executive Vice President of IRC’s Board for the past two years, said: “I will make every effort to promote the great tradition of community-building and inter-faith understanding that has been the work of the IRC. I hope that our work in this community can be responsive to the real hungers of our community – whether they be the economic hardships, the needs of youth or those of the elderly.”
Since IRC’s founding 35 years ago, Iona College has been very involved with the organization’s work in the City of New Rochelle and has always had representatives on its board. The IRC consists of 30 board members from every faith denomination in New Rochelle, currently comprising 74 houses of worship. The IRC has been the original sponsor of the New Rochelle’s Meal on Wheels program as well as an interfaith housing department serving senior citizens (now independently incorporated).
The IRC helps Iona College network with diverse houses of worship that may serve the spiritual needs of their students. In the course of the year the organization sponsors two forums promoting interreligious understanding, a Thanksgiving Day prayer service, an inter-faith awards banquet and other initiatives.
Mr. Procario-Foley, who teaches an academic service-learning course at the College’s Religious Studies department and serves as a resource for faculty members developing academic service-learning coursework, has long been committed to the IRC. He oversees all the offerings at Iona College Center for Campus Ministries and works closely with local volunteer service offerings and co-chairs the Week of the Peacemaker.
Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Edmund Rice Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education. Iona, currently listed in the US News and World Report’s annual “America’s Best Colleges 2008” and The Princeton Review’s Best Northeastern Colleges 2008 edition, offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as Master of Arts, Master of Science and master of business administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
