Purchase, NY - On Wednesday, May 7 at 10:00 am, the Neuberger Museum of Art | Purchase College invites the community-at-large to a reception to learn about volunteer opportunities available through the Museum Service Council (MSC), the 100-member volunteer force of the Museum.
Members of the MSC help visitors experience the joy of looking at art as well as making personal connections with works of art. MSC members not only provide a valuable service, but gain new experiences, learn how a museum works, meet many others who share a love of art, and are the first to get to see the nationally- and internationally-acclaimed exhibitions presented by the Neuberger Museum of Art.
The Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, State University of New York, engages and inspires diverse audiences by actively fostering the study, appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of modern art, African art, and the art of our time.
Volunteer Opportunities:
a) The Docents (tour guides) are a team of men and women who give their time and share their knowledge with visitors on tour through the Museum’s galleries. They listen to visitor responses and encourage individual interpretation. With their in-depth training, docents facilitate the interpretation of the Museum’s modern, contemporary, and African art. Docents tour the collections as well as more than a dozen changing exhibitions each year. Any volunteer with a passion for art and a love of sharing the experience of looking at art will find this work uniquely enriching.
Over 10,000 visitors on organized tours alone came to the Neuberger Museum of Art last year. Among them were over 8,000 students for whom a visit to a museum can be an opportunity to actively engage with visual art -- literally, an eye-opening experience. The docents enliven works of art through interpretation and activities.
b) Members of the Research Committee meet monthly and devote additional independent time researching the artists in the Museum’s collections and temporary exhibitions. Work is done in libraries, on the Internet, and by telephone. The material collected is invaluable to docents and staff in preparing for exhibitions. The committee members also maintain a small collection of research materials housed in the Museum.
All volunteers become members of the Friends of the Neuberger Museum as well as the Museum Service Council and receive many benefits in addition to the enriching volunteer experience. Among the benefits are free admission to many museums worldwide, participation in MSC sponsored art-related field trips, and a discount on Museum Store purchases.
