Westchester Community NewsMt. Vernon, NY - Greater Centennial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church will celebrate Rev. W. Darin Moore’s 15th Pastoral Anniversary from Tuesday, June 10th thru Sunday, June 15th.

Activities include a revival, concert and gala luncheon and feature a performance by Broadway’s Three Mo’ Tenors.

The revival is on Tuesday, June 10th and Wednesday, June 11th.   Dr. Rudolph W. McKissick, Jr., Senior Pastor Bethel Baptist Institutional Church in Jacksonville, FL., and Dr. Carolyn Showell, a Maryland-based Evangelist, respectively, will preach.   A concert, the “Centennial Experience in Music,” by the church’s music and dance ministries, is on Friday, June 13th.  Kenneth Alston, a Three Mo’ Tenors cast member, is the concert’s special guest artist.

All Three Mo’ Tenors will perform during the luncheon, on Saturday, June 14th, at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich, 1800 East Putnam Avenue, Old Greenwich, CT.   The cost is $100.00 per person.  The revival and concert are free and will be held at Greater Centennial, 312 South Eighth Avenue, Mount Vernon, NY. For information call 914-664-1838, ext 101

Moore, who grew up in Mount Vernon, was chosen to lead Greater Centennial in 1993.  His appointment was a rarity. In Methodism, a minister is not normally chosen to lead the church where he or she grew up.  Since his arrival, the church’s membership has grown from 800 to nearly 5000, making it the largest church in the A.M.E. Zion denomination and one of the fastest growing churches in the Lower Hudson Valley.

The church’s ministerial staff has increased to include Ministers of Discipleship, Support Services, Youth, Evangelism and Outreach, Family and Visitation, as well as many other Associate Ministers leading more than 45 ministries.  These ministries enrich and enhance the lives of members and non-members alike.   In 2007, the Greater Centennial Community Development Corporation built 16 two-family homes for first-time homebuyers. The church’s Imani Cultural Academy provides after school homework help for area children.

In 2004, Moore was also appointed the Presiding Elder of the A.M.E. Zion Church for the Bahamas.  An internationally recognized speaker, biblical scholar and lecturer on church growth, Moore travels the globe preaching and helping churches grow.

In a letter congratulating Moore on 15 years of pastoral leadership, The Right Reverend George E. Battle, Jr., Presiding Bishop of the A.M.E. Zion Church, the Northeastern Episcopal District, wrote, “It is clear that you are instilling in your Church family to ‘…seek ye first the kingdom of God…’ in their everyday lives.”  In closing Battle wrote, “Additionally, you may look forward with great anticipation to your future ministry and the many lives that you will touch.”

Moore is committed to bettering the lives of others.  To that end he served nine years on the Mt. Vernon Board of Education, co-founded Westchester One in Praise, an organization that hosted Good Friday services at the Westchester County Center and a member of the Executive Committee of the World Methodist Council. He was formerly a member of the Westchester County African-American Board, Commissioner of the Mount Vernon Housing Authority and served on the Board of the Mount Vernon Neighborhood Healthcare Center.

He is currently President of the United Black Clergy of Westchester.  Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano recently appointed Moore to the Use-of-Force panel to make training recommendations at the Westchester County Police Academy.   The panel was established after the killing of off-duty Mount Vernon police officer Christopher Ridley by Westchester County Police officers.
