White Plains, NY - Westchester veterans should be glad to hear that a Scarsdale student with a passion for honoring America’s troops has won the title of Miss New York and will go on to compete for the Miss America crown.
Many local veterans and service members got to meet Alyse Zwick when she toured Playland with County Executive Andy Spano on Veterans Appreciation Day on May 31. Aware that her personal platform for the Miss America Organization was honoring war heroes, the county’s Veterans Service Agency had invited the 23-year-old ballet dancer and CUNY student to say hello to the troops.
Last weekend Zwick went to the Miss New York competition in Albany and returned bearing the title.
“It’s wonderful to see a local woman as talented and intelligent as Alyse going on to represent New York in a national arena,” Spano said. “Just this week she offered to continue working with our veterans office, helping out however she can, and we hope to take her up on that.”
Zwick cites her grandfather -- a living World War II veteran -- as her inspiration. She now speaks to schools where she encourages students to write to overseas troops, thanking them for their service. She assists the United War Veteran's Council in New York City and is the host of their "Thank You for Serving" DVDs, produced by HBO. She has also volunteered at the Walter Reed Hospital and West Point.
"I am truly honored to take the title of Miss New York as Miss Westchester County,” Zwick said. “Veteran's issues are of great concern in Westchester County and New York state therefore, I am happy to lend a helping hand and continue my support in the veteran community."
