Scarsdale, NY - The Greenburgh Nature Center and The Sierra Club Lower Hudson Group are presenting a free talk on the topic: “What’s Happening with the Honeybees and Why”, at the Greenburgh Nature Center, Wednesday, April 9, 2008, 7:30 p.m.
The free program will be held at the Nature Center’s Manor House on Wednesday, April 9th at 7:30 p.m. Attendees are invited to come at 7 p.m. for informal discussion and light refreshments. The program is geared towards adult and students of high school age and older.
With over 50% of the United States food crops depending on bee pollination and many commercial beekeepers reporting up to 80% of their hives collapsing last year, the United States may be in for major food shortages if the problem occurs again this year.
Leading the discussion on Colony Collapse Disorder, the name given to this phenomenon, will be John Crockett, the owner of Mother Nature’s Farms, Inc., in Carmel, NY. John began beekeeping in 1998 and has two conventional honeybee hives and an observation hive as well. His farm business focuses on converting organic wastes into high-quality soils and soil conditioners that can then be used by farmers, landscapers, homeowners and nurseries.
The talk will address the environmental factors that may be contributing to Colony Collapse Disorder and what might be done to correct the problem.
The Greenburgh Nature Center is located at 99 Dromore Road, off Central Park Avenue, in Scarsdale, NY. Parking is free, and handicapped parking is available. The center’s grounds are open daily dawn to dusk throughout the year. The Manor House exhibits are open daily except Fridays and a few holidays, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on weekends.
