Yonkers, NY - Join Hope for Change Foundation (HFC) as it presents a one-night-only breast cancer benefit, “Songs For A New World,” on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m. at the Riverfront Library, 1 Larkin Center, in Yonkers.
Starring Hope Players Gina Gentile, Michael Hanson, Gina Noto and Joe Venice, the show itself represents the hope for a new world—a world without breast cancer.
“This show is about life and the obstacles we come across,” said Noto, 21, of Granite Springs. “Life is filled with challenges; hopes and dreams that sometimes don’t come true, or don’t work out the way you might have planned.”
For many, a new calendar holds the promise of a new world, a clean slate on which to write the story of their lives. “Songs for a New World” brings to life the hopes and dreams of a myriad of characters, each of whom has a story to tell. And as they sang the “Songs for a New World,” these Hope Players discovered those songs were very much their own.
“Tears swaying the outcome of a conversation, the blend of excitement and confusion that comes with meeting different people in college, a relationship ending and the daunting task of having to begin again or reuniting with a love you knew had never gone away,” Hanson, 22, of Pelham, said of one of his songs. “These are things we've all been through and can relate to.”
“Most of the characters I play mirror people in their 20s and 30s today, striving for what they think is the American ideal for happiness; basically Hollywood “perfection,” said Gentile, 23, of the Bronx. “They want the romance that comes not with the love, but the stuff!”
One of Gentile’s songs is particularly poignant. Playing the mother of an American Revolutionary soldier, Gentile wrestles with the same sadness, fear, pride, anger and loss her character feels. “It's my own little time to pray for our troops today and their families.”
For Joe Venice, 22, of Yonkers, the show’s characters embody the innate adversity people face everyday. “The same struggles still translate,” he said, “but as has been the case throughout history, with faith, love, family and determination, anything can be accomplished.”
