Westchester Community NewsTarrytown, NY - Westchester’s firehouses will be turning up the heat in their kitchens as they prepare to do battle in the Greater New York Firefighter Cook-off.

The event is just one of the highlights of the upcoming Greater New York Beer & Food Festival, sponsored by The Journal News. The Festival, taking place at The Doubletree Hotel in Tarrytown on October 25-26, will be an exciting weekend of food from local restaurants, beers from around the world, cooking demonstrations, live music and more.

The Greater New York Firefighter Cook-off will be sponsored by Yuengling, America’s Oldest Brewery, and will be a timed “Iron Chef”-style grilling competition involving a secret ingredient. A pair of representatives from four finalist firehouses will compete in two heats of finals on Saturday, October 25, with the winning firehouse taking home a 41-inch stainless steel Viking grill and other prizes.

To become a finalist, firehouses will have to make it through the initial qualifying round on Thursday, October 23 at 5:00 p.m. Participating firehouses must prepare a plate of food involving homemade barbeque sauce and bring it to the Doubletree Hotel where judges will taste the dish and score it based on creativity, presentation and taste. On both Saturday and Sunday, attendees can enjoy live chef demonstrations by some of the Hudson Valley’s most celebrated chefs. Brewmasters will introduce beer pairings for these delectable dishes. Chef demonstrations will run from 4 - 5 p.m. on Saturday and 2 - 5 pm on Sunday.

On Saturday evening, 107.1 The Peak will host “BBQ, Brews & B-Sides,” an evening of “Fab Fun” with live music from The Smithereens, performing great classic Beatles tunes from their latest album, along with hits from their celebrated 28-year musical career. On Sunday, hotel VIP guests and combo pass holders will be treated to a European buffet brunch prepared by Chef Claude of Bistro Z. An assortment of classic and contemporary beers will be offered as pairings throughout the meal.
