Westchester Community NewsMt. Kisco, NY - The Friends of Westchester County Parks, Inc. will hold its Fourth Annual Gala Dinner Dance and Silent Auction on Wednesday, May 14, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, NY.  With the theme “Celebrate an Evening with Friends,” the Friends of Westchester County Parks will honor Dr. Kathryn W. Davis of Tarrytown, NY.

Dr. Davis, who has lived in Westchester for 63 years, has given a very generous bequest of $20 million to Scenic Hudson for preserving legacy landscapes and Hudson River waterfront lands. She has also provided $1 million for her hometown for Tarrytown’s Scenic Hudson River Walk Park. In addition, $4 million will be earmarked for Sleepy Hollow’s Kingsland Park Boathouse renovations, as well as improved access to the Hudson River.

“Kathryn Davis is a visionary conservationist who is showing extraordinary leadership through this generous gift,” said Ned Sullivan, President of Scenic Hudson. “She understands the urgency of protecting these special places before it is too late.”

A noted philanthropist, Dr. Davis holds a Ph.D. from the University of Geneva in Switzerland, an Honorary Doctor of Law from Columbia University, and an Honorary Doctorate from Middlebury College. She has authored numerous articles, a book titled “The Soviets at Geneva,” and has lectured for many years before educational and civic groups on India, Russia, China and Switzerland.

She has also been active in many organizations including Chairman on Foreign Policy for the Westchester League of Women Voters and President of Wellesley in Westchester. She is Trustee Emeritus of The Youth Foundation, Wellesley College, and Heritage Foundation. She is also a Member of the Visiting Committee of the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard, Member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and Member of the Council of American Ambassadors.  Dr. Davis and her late husband Shelby Cullom Davis, a former U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland, were Founding Patrons of the Arts Library at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Additionally, Dr. Davis is a member of the Cosmopolitan Club of New York City, Everglades Club of Palm Beach, Northeast Harbor Club in Maine, and Sleepy Hollow Country Club. Awards include: the Harry Edmonds Award from International House of Columbia University; Women’s national Republican Club for Life Achievement; The Gold Medal from the National Institute of Social Sciences, and many others.

Gala tickets are $300 per person, or tables of 10 can be purchased – a Bronze table for $3,500, Silver table for $5,000, or Gold table for $7,500. Table purchases will include premier seating and a page in the Dinner Journal.

For more than 30 years, the Friends of Westchester County Parks has continued its tradition of helping to bridge the budget gap, raising thousands of dollars to buy equipment, fund children’s programs, provide amenities and support the Westchester County Parks system. The Westchester County Parks Department manages more than 50 parks and recreation properties, spanning 18,000 acres – a tribute to those people of vision who started a movement that created one of the finest park systems in the country. In 2003, the department was accredited by the National Recreation and Parks Association, the first county agency in New York and one of only 47 agencies in the country to earn that distinction.
