Scarsdale, NY - Rabbi Emerita Sally J. Priesand, the first female rabbi to be ordained in the United States, will be the guest speaker at the Annual Shabbat Dinner and Service hosted by the Women of Reform Judaism on Friday, June 6 at Westchester Reform Temple (WRT) in Scarsdale.
The dinner will begin at 6:15 p.m., and the service will follow at 7:45 p.m.
The topic of Priesand’s talk, “Some Reflections on My Life as a Rabbi,” will focus on her own personal journey to become a rabbi, as well as her thoughts about the impact female rabbis have had on the Jewish community. It was in 1972, after pressure from both women’s groups and civil rights groups, that Priesand, then aged 25, was ordained at the theological seminary HUC-JIR in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Upon ordination, Priesand served for seven years at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in New York City as Assistant Rabbi and then Associate Rabbi. In 1981, she became Senior Rabbi at Monmouth Reform Temple in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, where she served until she retired in 2006.
Rabbi Priesand was a founding member of ARZA and served on the executive boards of both the Central Conference of American Rabbis and the Union for Reform Judaism. She is the author of “Judaism and the New Woman,” and has contributed writing to several other books. Numerous leadership awards and honorary memberships include the establishment of the Rabbi Sally J. Priesand Visiting Professorship of Jewish Women’s Studies at HUC-JIR.
Recently, she was one of twenty women honored by the Jewish Women’s Archives and the UJC National Women’s Philanthropy. Rabbi Priesand currently resides in Ocean Township, New Jersey.
The fee for the dinner is $25 for adults and $10 for children. The service and program are free and open to the public. Westchester Reform Temple is located at 255 Mamaroneck Road, Scarsdale, N.Y. For reservations or information, contact the Temple at 914-723-7727; or email
