Fall Family Events At Hilltop Hanover Farm

Westchester Community NewsWhite Plains, NY - Learn how to make your own preserves and wine, pick your own fresh organic vegetables, enjoy dinner and a movie with your family and celebrate the joys of autumn at Pumpkin Day this month at Hilltop Hanover Farm in Yorktown.

Backyard Farmer Program: Making Preserves – Sunday, Oct. 5, 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Join experienced preserve and jelly maker Margaret Von Der Meden as she demonstrates how to make healthy homemade jams and jellies using fruits from your our own backyard.  Learn how to make crabapple and quince jellies.  15 participants maximum; by reservation only; $20 fee.  To register, call 737-7931. Basics of Home Wine Making – Wednesdays, Oct. 15, 22, 29 & Nov. 5, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Experienced vintner Tom De Chiaro of the Winery at St. George will be running a 4-part workshop series on making your own homemade wine.  The first class is on the basics and equipment required to make wine. 15 participants maximum; by reservation only; $15 fee per class.  To register, call 962-2368.

Pick Your Own Vegetables – Saturday Oct. 18, 9 a.m. - noon
Pick your own fresh produce in the fields and pay at the farm stand.  All produce is grown using organic methods with no synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides.

Dinner and a Movie – Saturday, Oct. 18, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Pack a picnic dinner and visit the farm and enjoy a movie.  “Broken Limbs” nominated for 2 Northwestern Emmy nominations helps viewers discover ways in which any individual can play a role in not just saving America’s farmers, but restoring hope in humanity.  Movie starts promptly at 7 p.m.  with discussion afterwards. Admission is free.

Pumpkin Day – Sunday, Oct. 26, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Pumpkin Day is sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension and is a day of family fun, decorating your own pumpkin, games and displays. Refreshments and farm vegetables available for purchase.   $10 per person. Call Cornell at 285-4627.

Hilltop Hanover Farm, a 180-acre former dairy farm, was purchased by the county in 2003 for agricultural preservation, drinking water protection and the promotion of environmental stewardship through demonstration projects and sustainability programs.  Admission is free and the farm is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday.

Hilltop Hanover Farm is located at 1271 Hanover Street in Yorktown Heights.  It can be reached via the Taconic State Parkway.  Take the Millwood/Route 100 exit to Route 100 north.  Turn left onto Route 118.  Make a right onto Hanover Street.  The farm is on the left.
