White Plains, NY - More than 400 members of the Westchester community were present when Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey, one of Congress’s most powerful members and Westchester’s representative, was honored with the Woman of Vision award for her tireless efforts in Congress in support of the health and humanitarian causes that are central to Hadassah’s mission.
In addition, sixteen local women were honored for their leadership at the local level. In presenting the awards Karen Everett, the Westchester Region President said “the Congresswoman, a Hadassah life member, exemplifies the values of Hadassah through not only her words, but her actions every day, both in the community and in the nation’s capitol. We are honored that she represents our district, and are proud of her achievements and contributions. Our other honorees come from across our region and they embody our goals through their daily efforts in time, energy, and skill in support of our humanitarian projects. ”
The Congresswoman urged support for the potential for Israeli-Palestinian peace, and the dividends it brings to the region and the world: opportunities for common efforts related to economic development, tourism, and conservation of historic and natural resources, investments made possible when scarce resources are no longer diverted to enormous regional military budgets, and the benefit in combating terror and extremism, when radical jihadists are deprived of one of their primary recruiting tools.
In addition, the Congresswoman discussed the advances of women in her lifetime, and the changes due to the presence of more women in Congress, including legislation requiring that medical research include testing on females as well as males, and efforts to reverse the global gag rule. She also addressed the success of Congress under the leadership of the first female Speaker of the House, in passing the security recommendations of the 9/11 commission.
