Ossining, NY - Retired teacher Barbara Friedrich loves to get kids involved in hands-on educational experience but her cider pressing demonstrations are sure to grab the attention of adults as well.
Barbara, who will be giving the demonstrations at Community Markets Farmers’ Markets throughout October with her husband Bill Friedrich, sees cider pressing as an outreach program, to encourage appreciation for both the fruits available locally, and the long lost pressing process.
The cider press in use by the Friedrichs is a replica of hand-presses that were used before cider processing became mechanized. Besides providing an educational experience and a history lesson, the Friedrichs will demonstrate how to produce fresh, delicious apple cider from local farmers’ market apples.
Community Markets will be hosting cider pressings on the following farmers’ markets:
Sunday, Sept. 28, 10 am-noon: Rye Farmers’ Market located in Parking Lot 2 on Theodore Fremd Ave. Behind the Purchase St. Stores.
Saturday, Oct. 4, 10 am-noon: Ossining Farmers’ Market located corner of Main and Spring St. (100 Main Street, Post Office Parking Lot).
