Caramoor's Annual Plant Sale

Westchester Community NewsKatonah, NY – Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts announces its Annual Plant Sale, Friday, May 2 through Saturday, May 10, 2008.

Appealing to discriminating gardeners looking for the less obvious choices, Caramoor’s Annual Plant Sale features more than 100 varieties, primarily grown in Caramoor’s own greenhouse.  Highlights include a group of Camellias referred to as “Ice Angels,” in both spring- and fall-blooming varieties; three new varieties of Brugmansia, developed by Caramoor’s Horticulturist, Clifford Dickson; tropicals, cactus, and succulents.

Other highlights of the sale include:

     * in limited quantity, the Hardy Orange, a hardy ornamental Citrus known for its two-inch spikes and its decorative yellow-orange fruit – in fall, a great addition to any Mediterranean garden.
    * a pink double climbing rose, reaching 12 to 15 feet.  This rose offers the strong sweet fragrance of an Old World rose.  Both are from Caramoor’s own garden.

For young gardeners there will be a variety of unusual gourds and Dill’s Atlantic Giant pumpkin plants – the granddaddy of all giant pumpkins known to attain weights over 400 lbs.

Garden accessories, including free-standing steeple trellises, urns, and planters will also be for sale.  Among the accessories available will be Hypertufa troughs, created at Caramoor.   Hypertufa is a man-made, lighter-weight substitute for Tufa rock, the spongy cellular rock found in limestone country, which has for centuries been hollowed out and carved in order to make planters.

Hours for the Annual Plant Sale, May 2 through May 10, are 10:00 am to 4:00 pm daily, except Sunday, May 4 when the hours are 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm.

For additional information call the Caramoor Box Office at 914.232.1252.

About Caramoor
Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts is the legacy of Walter and Lucie Rosen, who built the great house and filled it with their treasures. Walter Rosen was the master planner of the Caramoor estate, bringing to reality his dream of building a country home to showcase his decorative arts collection and to entertain friends from around the world.  The Rosens’ musical evenings were the seeds of the International Music Festival of today.  Realizing the pleasure their friends took in Caramoor – the house with its art collection, the gardens, and the musical programs on summer evenings – the Rosens gave the estate to the public as a center for music and the arts.
