Mt. Kisco, NY - Discover how to work with nature to become a successful “backyard farmer” during a series of hands-on workshops for adults, this spring at Hilltop Hanover Farm and Environmental Center in Yorktown Heights.
The first session, “Beekeeping for your Backyard,” takes place on Sunday, April 13. Then on Saturday, May 10, learn “Composting for your Organic Garden.” The third topic, “Edible Weeds and Wildflowers in Your Backyard,” concludes the series on Sunday, June 8. Each one-hour session begins at 3 p.m. All sessions will be held in the farm’s demonstration garden; participants should dress appropriately for garden work.
The instructor is Margaret von der Meden, a Yorktown resident who is a backyard farmer and farm-based educator with 20 years of experience.
Suggested donation is $10 per session.
The Backyard Farmer series is hosted by Something Good in the World, a non-profit educational organization that promotes a deeper connection to the earth through environmental education for people of all ages.
Hilltop Hanover Farm and Environmental Center, owned and operated by Westchester County, is a 50-acre working farm, with cultivated fields, sheep pastures and a vineyard. The center promotes sustainable agricultural and environmental education through demonstrations and educational programs.
The farm is located at 1271 Hanover Street in Yorktown Heights and can be reached via the Taconic State Parkway, Millwood/Route 100 exit. Follow Route 100 north 3.5 miles, and turn left at traffic light onto Route 118. Make first right onto Hanover Street and follow 1.5 miles to farm entrance on left.
