Port Chester, NY - Nearly 12,000 walkers – including individuals with autism, their families and friends –- participated in Autism Speaks’ 7th Annual Westchester/Fairfield Walk Now for Autism on Sunday, June 8, at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY.
Approximately, $1 million was raised for critical scientific research into a growing health crisis that now affects 1 in every 150 children at. All proceeds from the event benefit Autism Speaks, the nation’s leading autism advocacy organization.
According to Valerie Zygmont, Westchester/Fairfield & Greater Hudson Valley Walk Manager, funds are still being counted and the chapter hopes to reach its goal of $1.5 million. Last year’s event raised more than $1.2 million with more than 216 teams. This year’s sponsors included The Ward Family Foundation, Leterman-Gortz Corporation and Nutricia The day consisted of a 2- to 3-mile walk and Community Resource fair with educational sources, therapists, schools, recreational organizations, and creative child-friendly activities; a true “one-stop-shop” for families affected by autism.
Toys “R” Us, Toys “R” Us Children’s Fund, Parade Magazine and Chevrolet proudly serve as national sponsors of the Autism Speaks Walk Now for Autism program.
Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges. Another child is diagnosed every 20 minutes.
