Westchester Community NewsScarsdale, NY - Rabbi Dr. David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, will be the guest speaker at the 2nd Annual Jacob and Deborah Rubinstein Memorial Lecture.

His talk, “Understanding Modern Orthodoxy,” will take place on Tuesday, November 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Westchester Reform Temple in Scarsdale.

Internationally recognized for his publications and research in the areas of Jewish religious thought, ethics and modern Jewish history, Rabbi Ellenson is widely considered to be a leader of the Reform movement.  As an authority on the emergence of modern Orthodoxy, Ellenson focuses his scholarship on the concept of pluralism within a Jewish context, with tolerance being a defining theme of his work.

In addition to being President of HUC-JIR, where he was ordained in 1977, Ellenson also serves there as the I.H. and Anna Grancell Professor of Jewish Religious Thought.  He is a Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute of Jerusalem and a Fellow and Lecturer at the Institute of Advanced Studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.  An author of extensive publications, Rabbi Ellenson’s most recent book is entitled, “After Emancipation: Jewish Religious Responses to Modernity.”

The Jacob and Deborah Rubinstein Memorial Lecture, presented annually in collaboration with Young Israel of Scarsdale, commemorates Rabbi Jacob Rubinstein and his wife, Deborah, who perished in a fire at their home in Scarsdale in 2008.
