ShopRite Announces New Reusable Bag Program
Posted by Westchester.com
Sunday, 11 May 2008

Westchester Business NewsKeasbey, NJ - Beginning Sunday, May 11, 2008 ShopRite is giving its existing Two Cents Back bag program a boost with the introduction of a new incentive for customers.

The new Five Cents Back program encourages customers to use non-disposable bags such as ShopRite’s EarthWise Reusable Bag.  The offer extends to any non-disposable, reusable bag including canvas and non-woven polypropylene bags. The existing Two Cents Back reusable bag program remains active at all ShopRite stores for those customers who reuse their paper or plastic bags.

By participating in either of ShopRite’s reusable bag programs, not only will customers do their part to protect the environment by reducing waste, they’ll also save money off their shopping order.

“Recently, there has been a lot of discussion as to which bag is better for the environment: paper or plastic,” stated Joe Colalillo, chairman and CEO of Wakefern Food Corp., the marketing and distribution arm of ShopRite.  “But in reality, neither paper nor plastic is the answer. The best choice is using a ‘reusable’ bag.” ShopRite first recognized the importance of reducing the number of bags used by customers when it launched its Two Cents Back program in 1991. Last year alone, ShopRite customers kept 7.4 million bags out of landfills by reusing them and saved $148,000 off their grocery bill in the process. In addition, more than 1,700 tons of plastic bags and film are recycled each year by ShopRite stores and its environmentally-conscience customers.

“ShopRite continuously looks for ways to build awareness of the environmental challenges we are facing and we hope that our reusable bag program will encourage our customers to take part in doing the right thing for the environment,” stated Joe Colalillo.

A variety of reusable bags are sold at ShopRite stores starting from $.99.  The bags come in a variety of bag styles and colors including an insulated bag for chilled or frozen foods.

Americans use 92 Billion plastic grocery bags a year and 5 billion paper grocery bags.

One of the simplest ways to have a positive environmental impact is to use reusable grocery bags.
