Westchester Business NewsWhite Plains, NY - Anyone who is unemployed, struggling to make ends meet and open to learning how to improve their situation may want to attend an upcoming workshop series offered by the Westchester One Stop Employment Center.

The new program, entitled “Managing Your Finances in a Down Economy,” will include a series of three, once-a-week seminars that will provide information and decision-making tools to help participants address financial challenges. Targeted to Westchester residents who are unemployed or facing a job transition, the seminars are jointly sponsored by Westchester County’s Office of Workforce Investment and Community Capital Resources, a not-for-profit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) that provides financial and consumer workshops.

The workshop series is part of a county-wide financial education initiative that includes a money management website (www.westchestergov.com/managingmoney) and a "Dollar Sense" workshop series that will run throughout the year.

The workshops will offer practical training and information about managing everyday finances, in light of the difficult choices that families face due to loss of income from unemployment. Topics will include controlling cash flow, making a budget, managing debt and credit, and will provide guidance in putting together a personal action plan. The program is open to the public but participants are encouraged to sign up only if they can attend all three seminars.
The workshops will be given on consecutive Monday mornings from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, on June 15, 22 and 29 at the Westchester One Stop Employment Center, 120 Bloomingdale Road in White Plains.  Space is limited and interested individuals must register no later than Thursday, June 11.  Another series will be offered in the near future.

The workshops are as follows:

Session 1: June 15
“Assessing Your Finances During Transition”
This workshop will help participants evaluate their current financial situation in light of their present status and employment objectives. Presenters will include a discussion of the steps to develop a personal financial plan in the face of a reduced income. Topics will cover tracking your cash flow and assessing the financial resources you may have available during your job search.

Session 2: June 22
“Setting Financial Priorities”
Participants will review and assess the personal data that they have put together from the previous session and identify solutions to some of the problems that were identified in Session 1. There will be specific discussions about topics such as: managing credit problems, maintaining home ownership, insurance, and healthcare.

Session 3: June 29
“Adjusting Your Strategic Plan”
The final workshop will help participants complete a personal financial plan, including specific goals, action steps and time frame.  Specific questions and choices that participants may have to face as they explore career opportunities will be addressed.
