A circus layup in the paint 12 minutes into the first half will be one of Donte Chisolm's (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) most memorable shots as the senior guard doubled the nine points he needed to become the 20th member of the 1,000 point club at Manhattanville as the Valiants overwhelmed
the Hunter Hawks 103-81 Tuesday at Kennedy Gymnasium.
After Chisolm hit the two in the lane for his 1,000th and 1,001st career points, he came back after a defensive rebound by Brian Fink ( Queens, N.Y. ) and drained a three to put the Valiants up 37-23. On the next dead ball whistle, the officials stopped the game so Valiant Head Coach Pat Scanlon, himself a member of the 1,000 point club, could present Chisolm with a ball commemorating his 1,000 points.
"Donte is a great player who has had a great career," said Scanlon, after the game. "He's a great point guard and is very good all around. I'm happy for him, he deserves it."
Fink continued his hot start with 17 points, and now needs only 20 points for 1,000 in his career, and is shooting 55.6 % from the field and 50.0% from beyond the arc this season. Cody Moffett ( Brooklyn, N.Y. ) helped lead the Valiants to their first 3-0 start since 2005-06 with 25 points, four rebounds and three blocks. Moffett didn't miss from the free throw line either, shooting a perfect 9-for-9.
The Valiants capitalized on Hunter mistakes, as they scored 35 points off 24 Hunter turnovers. Manhattanville also took advantage of Hunter's 19 fouls and shot 18-for-23 from the foul line. Not the tallest team, the Valiants out-rebounded Hunter 38-33 and scored 48 of their 103 points in the paint.
"The guys had a lot of energy on both sides of the ball," said Scanlon. "We ran our plays and played an aggressive defense."
The Valiants went into halftime up 56-36 and received substantial production from the bench in the second half as non-starters scored 37 in the game.
Mike Horgan ( Cork City, ) came off the bench to lead the team with six rebounds, adding seven points. Angelo Laroche ( Brooklyn, N.Y. ) was also a factor, coming off the bench for nine points.
5'10" guard DeVon Barnett ( Washington, D.C. ) was second on the team with four rebounds and chipped in six points and two assists.
"I saw good things from the starters and from the bench," said Scanlon.
Hunter had four players score in double figures, led by forward Frantz Millien, who had 16. Bobby Kiernan had 10 assists to narrowly miss a double-double by three points. Kiernan also had a team-high eight turnovers.
The Valiants (3-0) will begin a four game road trip Sunday in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. and will play Vassar in their first road game of the year on at 2:00 p.m.
